Meteorological Department Offers Guidance for Earthquake Preparedness

To prepare for an earthquake:

  1. A flashlight with batteries and a medicine bag should be kept in the house and the location should be made known to everyone.
  2. Study basic first aid
  3. Have fire safety equipment, such as fire extinguishers and sand bags, to help prevent and combat fires.
  4. Should know the location of the water shut-off valve, gas shut-off valve, electric bridge for cutting electricity.
  5. Do not place heavy objects on the shelves or high shelves when earthquakes may fall dangerously.
  6. Tie heavy appliances firmly to the floor and walls of the house.
  7. The group should plan a meeting point in case anyone gets separated from the rest of the group and needs to come back together later.
  8. Build houses in accordance with the specified rules for earthquake prone areas.

During an Earthquake

  1. Try to remain calm and in control of your thoughts. If you are indoors, stay put. If you are outside, do not go back inside. Many people have been injured by going back and forth between the house and outdoors.
  2. If staying in the house during a storm, stand or crouch in an area with a strong structure that can support a lot of weight and is away from doors, balconies, and windows.
  3. If you are in a high-rise building, concentrate on getting out of the building as quickly as possible. Avoid any objects that could potentially fall on you.
  4. If you are outdoors, it is important to stay away from electric poles and other hanging items that may not be safe. Instead, opt for open spaces.
  5. Do not use candles, matches, or any other item that produces open flames or sparks in the area, as there may be a gas leak present.
  6. If you are driving, stop the car and stay inside the car until the shaking stops.
  7. It is strictly forbidden to use the elevator during an earthquake.
  8. If you're at the beach, stay away from the coast because there might be a big wave hitting the shore.

Post-Earthquake

  1. Check yourself and those around you for any injuries, and then provide first aid if needed.
  2. Leave the damaged building immediately, as a second earthquake may cause it to collapse.
  3. Wear closed toe shoes to protect your feet from any sharp objects or debris.
  4. Check the wires, water pipes, and gas pipes for any damage. If you suspect a gas leak, close the gas tank valve and do not light a match or start a fire until you are sure there are no gas leaks.
  5. Only use your sense of smell to detect any gas leaks. If you detect a smell, open all windows and doors.
  6. Stay away from any broken wires or wiring materials.
  7. Turn on a radio to listen for any emergency instructions, and only use the phone for essential calls.
  8. Inspect the toilet and drain pipes for any damage before using.
  9. Avoid entering any area with high levels of damage or a collapsed building.
