What are the qualification of blood donors?

 

Qualifications of blood donors

  1. Be between the ages of 17 and 60.
  2. Weigh at least 45 kg and be in good general health.
  3. No history of hepatitis or jaundice
  4. Have no history of malaria in the past 3 years or any venereal diseases, chronic cough, coughing up blood, bleeding abnormally easily, various blood diseases, asthma, allergies, epilepsy, chronic skin diseases, heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes, or thyroid disease.
  5. Not taking anti-inflammatory drugs in the past 7 days.
  6. Have no history of risky sexual behaviors or drug addiction.
  7. Refrain from donating blood for 6 months after surgery, childbirth, or abortion (if receiving blood, must refrain from donating blood for 1 year).
  8. Women must not be on their period or not be pregnant.

Preparations prior to donating blood.

  1. Ensure you get enough sleep for a minimum of 6 hours.
  2. Maintain good health, without any flu-like symptoms or while taking antibiotics.
  3. Eat a light, easy to digest meal before donation, without any added fat. 
  4. Refrain from drinking alcohol for at least 24 hours prior to donation.
  5. Stop smoking at least one hour before donating, to allow the lungs to purify the blood effectively.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                Guidelines after donating blood
  6. Take a break by lying down on the bed for a while before getting up - don't rush to stand up or you may faint.
  7. Consume the drinks that are provided and drink more water than usual for one day.
  8. Take your time to rest until you are certain that you are feeling better. Let the staff know immediately if you are feeling dizzy.
  9. Take one iron tablet daily to prevent iron deficiency.
  10. Avoid using any force on the area where the needle was inserted for 12 hours in order to prevent swelling and bruising.
  11. Avoid strenuous activities and excessive sweating that can cause exhaustion.  And don’t forget to donate blood at the Thai Red Cross Society
