As we enter the winter season, temperatures decrease and the air becomes drier. This causes the air around us to become dry as well. The water in our skin evaporates into the atmosphere. Therefore, those who neglect their skin will start to feel abnormalities much faster than those with healthy skin do. Clear signs of this include difficult-to-tame hair, dry and itchy scalp, dryness, chapped lips, and skin that becomes dry, itchy, and prone to rashes. Some may even experience wounds and flaking when wearing clothes, or experience static electricity when touching fabric. However, there are seven ways to help you maintain beautiful and clear skin during the winter season.

  1. Avoid excessive dryness of the skin by not disrupting our natural skin barrier. This includes avoiding hot showers, using harsh soaps, opting for mild acid-based soaps, not bathing too frequently, avoiding excessive exfoliation, and applying lotion, cream, or oil after every shower and throughout the day.
  2. Choose gentle shampoos and always use conditioner after shampooing to balance the electrostatic charge. Avoid using excessive force while combing or brushing your hair.
  3. Apply Vaseline to the lips, feet, and hands frequently.
  4. Wear clothing that covers and fits loosely to reduce contact with dryness, thus minimizing water loss from the skin.
  5. Avoid the sun and strong winds, and regularly use sunscreen or sunblock lotion.
  6. Certain medications may cause skin irritation, such as acne treatments or medications for chronic conditions like high blood pressure, cholesterol, and diuretics. In these cases, it is necessary to take extra care of the skin, similar to the care required by the elderly or individuals with pre-existing dry skin conditions. If despite taking care, symptoms such as itching and rashes persist, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist for proper treatment.
  7. Consume plenty of fruits and vegetables and stay hydrated while avoiding alcoholic beverages, tea, and coffee.

The winter season will be a happy season if you take care of your skin.
