CT Calcium Score is a test used to detect calcium deposits (calcified plaque) in the coronary arteries. These deposits result from chronic inflammation and long-term degeneration of the arterial walls, typically developing over 2–5 years. Contributing factors include diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, obesity (especially abdominal obesity), and genetics. Chronic inflammation causes the arteries to harden, leading to calcium buildup along the vessel walls. This process reduces the arteries' elasticity and causes narrowing, which can eventually lead to serious cardiovascular conditions.
People who are recommended to have coronary calcium tests include:
- People over 45 years old
- People with a history of smoking
- People with underlying diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol
- People with a body mass index (BMI) > 30
